MMI's commitment to helping the next generation of artists create without barriers is being propelled forward with the creation of our LEARN Windstar program set to launch in the 2025-2026 school year. LEARN Windstar is a supplemental general music education program designed by instrumental manufacturers "Nuvo" and executed by our trained MMI staff. The goal of this new program is to introduce students ages 5 and up to the world of instrumental performance and to provide a resource for music teachers and band directors to reintroduce the basics of band and general music to students struggling to advance within their school sponsored programs. Our mission with LEARN Winstar is to place an instrument in the hands of every elementary student to the end of fostering a continued interest in music education within the City of Jackson, which has been known historically for its successful and entertaining school sponsored ensembles.
In the past few years since the pandemic, enrollment in music programs throughout the city have seen a drastic decrease, most ensembles experiencing a 50% or more decrease in participation. Over 80% of JPS programs are experiencing an all-time historic low point in enrollment, quality of student talent, and evaluation performance. In an attempt to restore the quality and quantity of our district's programs, we at the Mississippi Music Institute are working with music educators within the district, to make a direct impact on the future of our programs. Starting at the lowest level (elementary education), we are using LEARN Windstar to create an interactive and innovative experience for the next generation of performers.
